The dive sites surrounding the islands of Koh Ngam Noi, Koh Ngam Yai, and the outcrops of Hin Lak Ngam and Hin Pae, offer excellent diving opportunities. Divers can experience fascinating seabed configurations from coral gardens to rock piles and caves. The main attraction which adds color to the sea is the extravagance of the fish. Most divers find the need to record the amazing variety in their logs! This is a plankton rich sea and the fish life proliferate at a remarkable rate. Visibility varies according to tide and weather factors. On a favorable day, the visibility can be 20 metres but at low tides it can be reduced to only 8 to 10 meters. Hin Lak Ngam This dive site is located 1 1/2 hours away from Thung Wua Laen Beach. The landmark comprises two weather-beaten rock outcrops. Like all other outcrops, they serve as roosting areas for sea birds. As the boat approaches, these birds take flight. Sensing that the boat and divers are of no threat, they calmly resettle on the rocks.

Characteristics The rock outcrop gradually broadens its formation to form the reef base at 27 metres. Its walls are terraced with crevices, holes, caves and protuberances. Hard and soft corals grow on the surfaces of these undulating formations. The abundant microscopic food among the corals attract schools of fish with possible sightings of whale shark and manta ray.

Koh Ngam Noi (Ngam Noi island) Koh Ngam Yai (Ngam yai island)
Both islands display scant vegetation amidst natural, almost artistic, rock structures. The little caves and crannies found here are homes to swifts. The nest they build are a special grade of birds nest which are treasured for their nutritional value and are accordingly highly prized. Bird's nests collectors build authentic huts on these rocks. Of these two islands, Koh Ngam Noi offers more attractive landscapes with huts built on different levels of rocky headland. The best time for photography is between 2.00 to 3.00 pm when the sun is shining. These two islands are about 15 minutes apart by boat and Koh Ngam Noi, the nearest island from Hin Lak Ngam, is about 25 minutes away. The dive schedule for these two sites is planned according to which way the wind blows. The dive boat will initially moor on the lee side where divers take a rest and gear up. When they are ready to dive, the boat will steer towards the exposed part of the island, allowing the divers to get into the waters and double back to moor in the calm bay. Dive masters take their bearings and guide divers through an underwater tour back to the dive boat.

Characteristics Narrow "swim throughs" offer a view of a healthy collection of soft and hard corals at these sights. Varieties of big resident fish found under rock ledges and little caves. Visiting fish are more apparent during the flow of the current.

Hin Pae (Hin Lak Ngam) This is the second rock outcrop dive site of Chumphon and is located at the northernmost area between the four popular dive sites of Chumphon.
|
Dive Scenes
Dive sites around these islands present continuations of these two island's rocky characteristics, forming caves and unusual rock formations which are home to snappers, sweet lips, groupers, families of angels, butterfly fish and parrot, spinefoot and surgeon fish. Here again, the yellow tails, damsels and schools of lunar fusilier fish cloud the mid waters feeding at random on floating microscopic marine animals. But as soon as the current ebbs, the appetite of the fish ceases and you will observe a slow down in activities. The goat fish are active at this point as they feed on the sandy seabed for traces of tiny marine animals which have sunk by using their two feelers at the base of their mouth. The depth is very comfortable at 10 to 18 metres as you swim through the caves and gorges. Crusty table corals, staghorn corals and brain corals in individual formation grow amongst the base and corners of the rocks. Zig zag oysters, thorny oysters and wing oysters are prolific on the walls of rock terraces. Sea cucumbers and sea urchins prefer the sandy areas near the edge of coral heads while the brown and white stripe feather starfish set roots on groups of sea whips and gorgonian branching coral. These two calm dive sites are ideal mooring points for rest in between dives and also offer views of scenic landscapes. The similarity of both the sites could possibly indicate that these two islands were perhaps once linked to each other. Visibility is about 10 metres, but the scope of fish life is viewed through a screen of micro-floating elements from plankton to smaller marine animals. Hence, the visibility may be reduced sometimes when the screen is thicker at some areas. |

Land, Sea and Home: Pioneering Thailand's "Green Tourism" Revolution at Chumporn Cabana |
|
|
 |
| |
On Site Water Treatment 1) The first implementation of environmentally friendly systems at Chumporn cabana is the water treatment facilities(Sub-Terra System). Specifically, the use of bacterial colonies, as well as plants to clean wastewater created from laundry, kitchen use, and general disposal of liquids. This process involves 4 stages: 1 bacterial stage 2 plants 3 enzymes 4 Earth filtration. |
Organic Recylcing and the Production of Fertilizer 2) Chumporn cabana resort has an on-sight treatment facility for all organic waste employing bacteria and enzymes as decomposition catalysts. With the by-products of this process, we produce a highly concentrated liquid form of fertilizer from the compost of all organic food and waste by-products of our kitchen. As we do not wish to waste any useful materials that can be put either into the production of food or into the maintenance of a healthy environment, we contribute all of our fertilizer toward the promotion of organic agriculture in our community. |
Low Impact Construction Practices 3) The Cabana used interlocking bricks to bypass the need for wood frames and supports in the construction of its two large main guest buildings. What we have done is to build these buildings using these interlocking bricks so that no wood scaffolding was needed in their construction saving the wood for the forests. |
"Water Cooled" Room Conditioning 4) The fourth application of environmentally friendly technology is actually something we here at the Cabana are pioneering. We are currently researching "water-cooled" walls in our rooms in order to completely eradicate the need for electrically powered air-conditioning systems. This approach is proving low-tech, low-maintenance, efficient and energy preserving. |
Community Development 5) The most comprehensive environmental policy must incorporate the community and its interests in order to find a measure of balance between humans needs and actions on the one hand, and the preservation of a healthy natural environment on the other. We are therefore currently engaged with local farmers in a direct purchasing, organic production scenario. We have convinced farmers to convert their lands to an organic only production regime and have guaranteed them market values for their produce. This produce we buy directly from them for use in our kitchens here at the Cabana. In doing so we believe we provide a superior, healthy and ethically conscientious service to our guests while at the same time promoting local organic agriculture. In this practice we have helped local farmers to become more self-reliant in so far as they avoid selling to agents who then resell their product to urban markets at a greatly exaggerated profit margin. |
"NO Development" Beachfront Policy 6) While other Beaches have almost universally been overrun with jet-skis and deck chairs, we have come into agreement with the Wua Laen Beach community to completely prohibit all kinds of motorized water transport beyond transport purposes. As well, our beaches are by policy free from deckchairs, recliners and all forms of furniture. In this sense we desire to maintain a "pristine" beach, and a view of the horizon dedicated to the beauty of the blue. |
Coastal Run-Off Water Traps and Erosion Inhibiting Vines 7) Road construction in Thailand has traditionally made use of local resources and the Chumporn area soils are rich in clay. Unfortunately, the beach road leading into the Cabana grounds runs within about 100 meters of the beachfront and was laid over a thick layer of clay rich earth. Over the years we noticed a gradual "leaching" of the clay onto the beach. In response to this situation we have built large "water traps", where we have been able to, to trap ground water exposed to the clay and prevent it from flowing out and leaching into the beach. In combination with these measures, we have laid down a layer of thick vines on the upper reaches of the shoreline to slow down the natural erosion of the sand beach during monsoon periods. |
|
Conclusion: The Cabana and You The Cabana continues to try and innovate in areas related to the interwoven ecological and social wellbeing of its surroundings. We have often gained from the expertise and experiences of our guests and warmly invite you to approach us with your ideas in our common commitment to the betterment of our world.
In realizing these ideals, we hope to take the tourism industry in a different direction, one which will preserve and enrich our beaches and forests without sacrificing the well being and integrity of the communities which have made them a favored destination for Thais and tourists alike. |
Background on Chumporn's Waters
Approximately 450 kilometers from Bangkok locates the province of Chumphon. I still recall that 30 years ago, it was nothing ordinary to take this trip to the south. The roads were unpaved and the journey took what seemed like forever. But all these hazzles disappeared, however, the moment we arrived. Unforgetable were the underwater treasures, the assorted fish I saw on the fishery pier ranging from the marlins, which are now never found in Thailand, all the way to the chubby shark, which in the eyes of the little boy then seemed to be as large as a two-hundred kilos barrell. We took a boat ride along the coastline, visiting islands such as Koh Mattra. Even then, I saw the tragic scene of remains of the fish that were killed from "underwater explosive". Until now, that picture is still vividly clear in my mind.
Some ten years ago, I returned to Chumphon for another visit to survey the complete picture of the underwater world of Chumphon. The number of islands of Chumphon is close to 50 in total, from Koh Kai, Umphor Pa-Tew, all the way to Koh Kang Suer, Umphor Sa-Wee. What we found was that the coral reefs of Chumphon, granted may not be as large and ample as the ones in Suratthani, the number and variety of undersea creatures were abundant. At the time I did not know as I do today, that the Chumphon Sea is one of the places where you can find plenty of what is called "Sea Cups" (Corallimorpharians). This rarity in the Chumphon Sea also extends to include some fish, sea anemone, and sea slugs all of which are hard to find in other areas.
For me, whether thirty years ago, ten years ago, the few days ago before I started this story,or even when I in my diving suit exploring the Chumphon Sea, this place holds a special spot, for its beautiful and mysterious enchantment. The discovery of seven Tozeuma armatum for the first time in Thailand in the year 2000, at the diving spot near Koh Ngam-Noi, where plenty of divers had visited over the period of 18 years only confirmed my description of Chumphon Sea as mysterious, enchanting, and full of wonders
