Probably not a lot of people will have heard of Amphur Pai, or the Pai district town of Mae HongSon province, located at almost midway, northeasterly, between Mae - Tang ( 37 Kms north of Chiangmai ) and Mae HongSon road, now a properly asphalted and all - weather route, linking the once isolated bordering Mae HongSon province closer to Chiangmai.
Pai can perhaps be described as a lost city once when normal communication barely existed, depending only on foot, horse and mule backs and at time bamboo rafting along the Pai River, to get from places to places.
Due to the existence of a great variety of hill tribe villages in the proximity, Pai is now reemerging at an increased activities on commodities and cultural exchanges. The town can look very colorful and busy on market days while calmness and tranquility will normally prevail .
It is difficult to describe the charm of Pai that draw visitors back time and again, and only to be there by your ownself can tell why.

Hill Tribe Village
- Hill Tribe Village in Pai District
There are many Villages within walking distance from Pai, such as Karen, Lesu and Lahu that you can visit either by yourself on a day trip or overnight with an organised trek.
- Hill Tribe Village in Pangmapha District
There are two ways to visit the hill tribe villages in Pangmapha district which is about 45 Kms north of Pai. The first is to walk through the jungle and the second is to follow the roads in a car. In this area there are Lesu, Lahu, Karen and Lawa villages, as well the local Shan people, some of whom were born here and some of whom migrated into Thailand from Burma.
The Lesu village of Nong Dong is one village that many travellers visit. The Lesu village of Nong Pha Jum, the Red Lahu village of Dong Ma Fai and the Karen village of Mae U - Mong are some others. If you travel by car or truck, there is a 30 kilometre road from Mae La Na to Ban Kham Luang that you can take as a one day trip, leaving in the morning and returning in the evening. This road passes through various villages, including Shan and Black Lahu villages. Every April the Black Lahu celebrate the festival of ‘Gin Waw’, and around the time of Chinese New Year (January) the Red Lahu celebrete New Year.

Pangmapha district is also famous for having the most caves in the county, with an estimeted one hundred caves in total. Each cave has its own individual beauty, although some are too dangerous for tourists without caving experience to visit. None of the caves have been wired electrically but local people provide lamps and offer their services as guides, taking visitors through the caves safely and securely.
Lod Cave Lod Cave is one of the most widely visited cave, located in Lod Cave National Park some … kms to the north of Pangmapha town and 77 kms from Mae HongSon. It’s possible to reach the cave by car or motorbike. Local people wait in front of the cave to provide their services as guides with lamps. Running through the cave is a small river called Lang River. Lod Cave is also the name of the village that surrounds this cave.
Pha Puek Cave Pha Puek Cave is located 15 kms from the main road. On the way tourists can stop to enjoy the wonderful views of mountains and Shan and Black Lahu villages. The mouth of the cave is so wide that sunlight casts its light right inside the cave.
Phi Men Cave Phi Men Cave can be found about 10 km from the town centre by walking uphill for around 10 minutes. Inside the cave there are ancient wooden coffins. To reach Boh Phi River you can walk for about 40 minutes uphill from the village of Luk Khao Lam.
Pha Deng Cave Pha Deng Cave can be found about 10 kms north of the Khong River. There is a 20 minutes walk from the road to reach the cave. There is a small stream that runs through this 1 km along cave that can be walked all the way from one end to the other during the dry season.
Bang Kham Cave There is junction off the main road to Bang Kham Cave, which lies 25 kms to the north from the road. The road to Bang Kham village hugs the border of the Shan State in Burma and is very beautiful. This cave is 800 metres long but is suitable for exploration only by those experienced in caving.
Lang Nam Cave During the rainy season the river runs very high and is not possible to visit this cave . However, you can visit during the dry or the winter season.
Su Sa Cave There is still no road leading up to Su Sa Cave, which means you have to walk for 3 -4 hours to reach the cave. The cave is situated in what is still unspoiled jungle, and in the area there are more then 20 waterfalls. There is a large stream running through the cave. The cave is 800 metres long and inside there is an underground waterfall.
Hot Spring & Waterfull
Tha Pai Hot Springs Tha Pai Hot Springs are part of a national park just 8 kms south of Pai. There is a stream running through the hot springs and you can choose either to bathe in the river or in bathtubs that have been built on the site. You can get to the springs by foot, bicycle, motorbike or car.
Mo Paeng Waterfall From the town center you can walk up to Mo Paeng Waterfall, passing through two Shan, one Lesu, one Haw Chiness and one Lahu village. The walk is 8 kms long and takes about 2 hours each way. You can also go either by bicycle, motorbike or car. Once at the falls, you can swim in one of the three pools.
Mae Yen Waterfall At the source of the Mae Yen River, Mae Yen Waterfall is about 12 kms from the town, located deep in the forest along a trail where there are no villages. The walk is beautiful and the waterfall is impressive. As the trail is so small, you cannot take any vehicles up to the falls. It's best to ask for directions from local people before you set off and to make sure you take plenty of water and some food as this trek will take you the whole day.

T e m p l e
Mae Yen Temple Mae Yen Temple is located halfway up a mountain and once you have climbed the 350 steps to get there the views over the valley are tremendous, covering a radius of around 10 kms. There is an interesting old chedi at the temple and also murals that were painted by a local artist about the previous lives of the Buddha.
Luang Temple Luang Temple has a beautful Shan style chedi, which was built in 1899 and also has a Shan style sermon hall and Buddha image. Luang temple is the main temple of Pai and is where many of the town's important festivals take place.
Klang Temple The chedi at Klang temple represents a mixture of Shan and northern Thai styles. The base up to the middle is Shan style and the middle to the top is northern Thai. There are alcoves set in the sides to represent the different Buddha images for each weekday.
A d v e n t u r e
Rafting Between July and December you can go on rafting trips for a few hours or a few days. You can choose from simple bamboo rafts or rubber rafts that are owned by several different rafting companies.
Elephant Riding There is an elephant camp near the hot springs that offers jungle rides all year round for two or more people. The ride usually passes through the hot springs.
Motorbike / Mountain Bike Tours In Pai, many people decide to rent their own vehicles to see the sights. You can choose from either motorbike or mountain bike and there is now a service that offers Enduro bike tours and courses to teach people how to ride.
Pai Canyon The scenic point where you could witness the breathtaking sunset view.
